I work full-time as a professional musician combining my composition and songwriting with performances and teaching. As well as playing the piano I also play the flute and recorder. I sing in both classical and rock styles and have performed many of my own songs and compositions at venues throughout the UK with bands and as a solo artist. I am currently working on a new solo album project of my compositions containing both songs and piano pieces. I am continually working to improve my skills as a musician and I am studying piano with pianist Anna Le Hair. I am part of a vibrant and diverse group of international students currently studying with professional mentor and musician Tom Hess on the Music Careers Mentoring Program.
The fact that I actively work as a musician, performer and composer enriches the experience of my students in many ways and expands their horizons.
As a professional musician I am able to give you many tried and tested tips on practice efficiency. I will teach you to really get to the heart of any problem that you are having in learning a piece of music and then help you to address it effectively. I encourage students to really think about their practice and this makes it much more valuable for them. The students that put in thoughtful work on a consistent basis are able to progress much more quickly.
Being
a composer and songwriter brings an additional perspective to learning and
especially allows me to help you to understand the structure and form of music
and the music theory which provides the building blocks for all music and
composition. Students are helped to understand melody and phrasing and to look
for rhythmic and chord patterns within the music that they are learning from an
early stage. I also encourage creativity from my students and I can help you
when you are writing songs and compositions. This is very rewarding for
students as I am able to help them to realise the music that they have imagined
which builds their confidence in their own creative skills.
As
a performer I am able to give detailed advice and coaching about being
expressive and adding depth and emotion to a piece of music. I will draw
on my own experience of live performance and help you to become more confident
in your own ability and meet the challenges of different performance
situations. I have experience performing as a solo musician as well as in many
different types of ensembles from chamber choirs to metal bands! These wide and
varied experiences mean that I can help you to deal with many different types
of performance situation. Although piano is typically thought of as a solo
instrument there are also many opportunities to work within bands and other
ensembles as a soloist or accompanist. We regularly play piano duets together within
lessons as well as working with band and orchestra backing tracks on CD.
I will help you to develop the confidence that you need to perform in front of
others and to reap the rewards of all your hard work as you share your
growing musical talents with friends, family and beyond.
